Default Transmission Fluid - Mobil 3309 or...

It seems the best fluid out there as opposed to purchasing high priced oil from Volvo, is Mobil 3309. However, it is not easy to come by. Fortunately there is an oil company in my city that sells it by the case (12). But what if I need just 1 more bottle? Near impossible to find it seems.

After looking online, I did find this fluid. Do you think it would work as well?

Only problem is if that is easier to come by and it becomes my new fluid of choice; I will need to order a case anyways and perform a complete flush first.

Anyone interested in buying single quart bottles if I get a case?

If you use the search function here, you'll find several threads on this topic. Toyota sells an identical trans fluid at a lower price. Mobil 3309 spec. Do not use any other type of fluid unless you want to buy a new transmission. At least that's what the wisdom here says -- I haven't experimented. And that's why you don't go to QuickieLube to get your trans fluid changed in a Volvo.

If your manual calls for Mobil 3309 spec fluid, stick with it. Try your local Toyota dealer's parts counter. Note, too, that the "dipstick" for Volvo is essentially hidden so you'll need a long but narrow spout filler. You may be able to buy single litres/quarts at the Toyota dealer at a lower price than identical spec at the Volvo dealer.

Go to the S60 list and you'll see a sticky about trans fluid. That should give you enough information. Read carefully. There's a potential problem about which bolt to remove. Choose the wrong one, and you're spending big money.

Visit your local Toyota dealer and pick up their Type-T IV fluid. A case was around $75.

Thanks for the info. I had read through several threads which is why I was turned to Mobil 3309. Otherwise I would be stuck on over priced Volvo barnd fluid.

Reason I asked is because I recently replaced the Valve Body in the transmission. After install I bought a new case of 12 quarts. Then fluched tranny again. But I still needed about 1 more quart.

By the way, did you know that you can simply adjust the tension on the solenoid springs to improve the all-too-well known thump from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 1st shift? I found a writeup about this online. I probably didn't need to buy a whole new $1,500 valve body. And I am most definately sure most of those V70 owners out there do not need a new transmission. Lets see here...$4,500 transmission or $5 in hardware to modify the valve body cover pan so you can fix it yourself.

Now that you have teased us with a possible fix, can you provide a link or the article of "how to"?????

Nice post, Thanks! I don't have issues with my tranny (yet), but nice to know where to start with certain issues,

Jerry
