Default Trying to check engine timing

Valve train on my engine started rattling and making noise all of a sudden.
I decided to check the timing. The 2 camshaft marks are easy to spot,
the one on crankshaft impossible. I suppose I can use a screwdriver to
find TDC on 1st piston, and go with that. Any other ideas?
I also noticed the hydraulic tensioner appears collapsed all the way to
the plastic protection washer. Is this normal? I expected a bit more
power from the tensioner. It appears weak. But the T-belt itself doesn’t
have much slack in it. I’m puzzled…

You might have a lifter going bad causing the noise.

The crankshaft mark is on the timing belt sprocket. The marks are on the tops of two successive teeth and very hard to see because of the location (hard to get a light on), the marks themselves (shallow grooves), and the normal dirt in the area.

When the camshaft sprocket marks are lined up, the crankshaft teeth will line up with a raised mark on the engine.

Do a search for timing belt - there are some decent photos on this site.
