Default Volvo V70(p2)/S60 front caliper refurb

I am just wondering whether anyone on this forum attempted to refurbish S60/V70(p2) front calipers or not?

In principle, the procedure should be straight forward:
1) take caliper off the car
2) force the piston out of the caliper
3) remove old 0-ring and the dust guard
4) polish surfaces
5) assemble in the reverse order

The reason I am asking about this is because Volvo does not seem to sell caliper repair kits for this model. Any ideas why this might be the case. I am not a fan of the aftermarket parts, however, it looks that I don't have any other option. Another question is whether calipers are any different on 305mm (usually with 16" wheels) and 285mm brakes (15" wheels). There are some posts on this and other forums that state that the calipers are the same, whilst Volvo documentation quotes different part numbers for these calipers.

I would appreciate if anyone could shed some light on this.

Many thanks

I've had a little experiance with this on my BMW and my wife's Honda CRV. What I experianced is that the cost of referbishing was more than the cost of replacing. I haven't priced out Volvo calipers yet but I can't imagine they cost more than BMW. For instance, to buy the parts to rebuild the rear caipers on the CRV was was over $200 CAN per. The cost of new after trade in of old ($90 credit per) was under $200 each.

Just something to think about! Post back if you do end up rebuilding to let us know what the costs ended up as.

Thanks ShawnM

I was only thinking about changing the rubber components and polishing the cylinder surfaces if necessary. The cost of parts for doing this is slightly over 10 pounds for each of the calipers and should not take longer than 30 minutes/each.

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Default Caliper kits

Anyone had any luck finding kits? With these vehicles aging, it makes good sense to replace the rubber parts before they fail cause rusting pistons etc. I was able to buy dealer kits for the old 98 S70 but have had no luck finding anything other than a complete caliper for the 04 V70. Many years ago it was very common to overhaul calipers/cylinders with every other pad replacement.

Default Caliper kits

Well, I stand corrected, I may have found front kits for around $12.00 US or less. Centric advertises them, part number 143.34021. Google the number, many suppliers, various prices, I'll order a set and see how they work. Common caliper used on many European cars it seems, and, parts are becoming available.

Default Caliper kits

Thank you Super for your input. I agree that changing the rubber parts and polishing the brake pistons and cylinders with the finest sandpaper is not such a difficult task and is well worth doing.

Partsforvolvosonline.com sell the Scantech repair kits, however, I bought the rubber parts from http://www.biggred.co.uk/ who specialize on caliper reconditioning.

Hope this helps,
