Default What to look for or expect?

Hi there, I have just become a Volvo owner again I pick my 02 V70 2.4 L Turbo up on Thursday. I had an 89 740 for about 5 years before getting a 91 BMW 535i. This V70 runs great, it's a one owner car with only 103,000 kms. Was a trade in at Toyota. They are doing safety and repair work on some scratches on rear doors plus a complete detail on the body (which is already great). Brakes and rotors are new, as part of the deal they will be inspecting and replacing ball joints, tie rods etc. if necessary. Can anyone offer suggestions of what else I may want to do right away or in near future? I will be doing complete fluid replacement by about Aug. at which time I plan to switch to synthetic oil as well. I haven't found any posts on significant issues with this model other than brakes and ball joints wearing out quicker than the average car. Any suggestions or personal experiances with this model would be greatly appreciated. By the way. Does anyone have a pfd file of the Bentley manual? I have one for the BMW e-34 if anyone could use it.

Thanks, Shawn

Thanks, I suspect it will be my favorite as well. I have been salivating over the V70 for a long time. I switched to synthetic oil in my BMW 535i mainly to help it run better in the winter, on start up etc. in -20 to -30 winter conditions. Is such a step advantagous for the V70 or would very regulat dino oil changes be as good? What has been your experience?

Thanks for the reply.

I would also recommend synthetic oil. I'm not sure how good the PCV system is in the '02 models, but in my '00 V70 it's a bit over-engineered and synthetic oil helps a lot in keeping it clean.

In my experience, often times, the spark plugs seem to be overlooked and not changed as frequently as recommended - particularly on turbo models. My car had original plugs to almost 100k miles, really makes a BIG difference in how well the car runs.

Thanks for the info. This is my first turbo so any advice on how to keep it running good and well maintained is appreciated. I switched my 1990 BMW 535i over to Mobil 1 5w-30 the year after I got it and noticed a huge differece in how it started in cold weather as well as how the idle improved. Mostly I was just hoping to add longevity to an old motor. It is still running strong but those cars never had problems with the motors just electrical etc.

Hello and congrats, Listen, The "European Formula" 0W-30 oils offered by Mobil1 and Castrol are the way to go for the following reason. They have an ACEA rating of A3,B3-a high temperature turbo charger bearing additive. I've seen the stuff stop two engines from smoking occaisionally at startup. One is a neighbor's Audi (1.8T) and the other is my Mom's Saab (2.3t). I use it in my boyfriend's Saab too. The 0 weight oils are a bit more prone to vanish than regular synthetics, but no big deal-you check your oil level, don't you?. In the Summer I make one of the "four" quarts Mobil1 15-50 (which is the heaviest Mobil1 made). Now don't give me a hard time with this. It has been working for years now. The neighbor with the Audi is still thanking me. My Mom and boyfriend take me for granted. Kira ps Do make sure you use the correct transmission fluid. Mobil 3309 (it's a non-synthetic) or Toyota Type-lV. Recently Mobil1 synthetic transmission fluid has been modernized to include a 3309 compliance. K

Thank you for the info. I also switch out one of the 3 1/2 quarts for my BMW to a heavier weight oil. I will look for the european formula Mobil 1. I don't recall ever seeing it. I find that Canadian auto stores don't always carry some of the products that I see mentioned on these forums, ie. Techtron, Sea Foam etc.
