Default Over fill warning

I have a diesel XC40 (2021 model). I had a yellow warning on lubricant level - service required. I couldn't find the dip stick under the bonnet so when I checked the electronic oil level on the centre consule, it said "over filled". As I've never had to add oil I assumed it was faulty instrumentation and booked it in for a service.

They told me that the diesel engine injects some fuel into the oil each time it starts but should burn off. However, changes to the diesel formulation mean it doesn't burn off as originally designed. It appears that the instrumentation was not faulty as they had to drain off half a litre to get back to the right oil level. This was all news to me! (and can't see any mention of it in the handbook)

I suspect the recent cold weather and the fact that I do quite a lot of short journeys may have exacerbated the issue. Anyone else had this issue? (and any tips to avoid it happening again?)

Seems to be another example of technology making lives more diffuclt ratherr than simpler.
