You have a broken spring. You'll need to replace the springs.

You can drive for the time being. I've had several people come in with broken springs and not even know.

If you owned a Gen1 S40, you'd be used to this :-) I've had 3 of 4 break - all the same way - about 3 inches from the end, up near the mount. Like ES6T says you probably won't notice it unless you look. You would want to replace in pairs (ie both front or both rears) particularly on older cars to keep handling balance and get a proper alignment done following the install.

So there is harm If we drive the car with broken springs? I mean suddenly break another part while we going 50-60 miles / hour on free way and hit others ?? some thing may be possible like this ? or just it is useful for to take shock absorb??

Like I already posted, you can drive it. I have had many customers not even know they were broken.

Same car and issue, anyone have a write up on coil replacement? Are shocks removed to do this (in which case I"ll replace them too)?
Need compressor or is there a trick (some cars you can drop the arms and install the spring and jack up to line up bolt holes, etc.

Thanks!

Check out Volvo friendly sites like FCP Euro, EEuroparts, IPD USA etc. Tasca Parts (a dealer site) shows a replacement genuine Volvo spring at $120. You didn't mention which spring broke on your car but assuming its a front, then you'd need to remove the entire strut and disassemble using a spring compressor to swap the spring. Since you want to do both sides, its a good time to replace the struts as well. If your rear shocks are separate, you do need to unbolt the shock to allow the spring to uncompress so no special tools are required. Worst part of doing rear shocks is removing trim/covers etc to reach the top bolts :-) As always, any time you dissamble suspension parts its a good idea to get an alignment (particularly after doing struts). If I were to guess, I'd expect 1- 1.5 hours labor per wheel.

It’s the rear spring so I bought all the parts to replace both sides. I’ve done front struts before but never rear springs.

To replace the rear springs, we compress them on the car and remove them. Then compress the new ones and install them.

Assuming this is with Volvo spec'd hydraulic compressor. Would these fit?
