Default Navigation Updates

I've just received my first free Nav update for my 2013 XC60. It came in a 3 DVD package and I was warned that it took 5 hours(!) to update, and that it must be with the car running. Luckily we were planning a 3-4 hour road trip which we stretched to 5 hours, by dragging out rest stops (without stopping the car), and sitting in the car at the end, waiting for it to finish. It really did take 4:50 to complete!

The obvious problems are how many people go on such long road trips, and if you kept the car parked, you would be adding to pollution, wasting gasoline, and heating up the car! In fact we left a New Jersey rest stop because of the dozen or so signs warning of a $200 fine for idling.

Do people really use the updates? It's such a really horrible method. Has anyone found any shortcuts or other methods to get the Nav data updated? (Will also be crossposting at swedespeed)

Thoughts?

Just did my updates to the 2014 XC60 last weekend. I was also taken aback but the length of time required for the updates. I did trust the instructions and shut the XC60 off during different trips over three days and did not have any problems with it starting up and completing the update! And yes, it also took just about 4:50 hours

Thanks waadman!

I must have been hallucinating, as I just reread the instructions and they DID say I could stop and restart the install. It might have been the customer service rep I talked to because of a problem with the activation code who told me that... Oh well, next year will be easier. Thanks for helping out.

On the same note DHK!

I had talked with a Customer Service rep with a similar problem on activation! They R very helpful but seem to be struggling with system problems. After back and forth calls the rep finally was able to establish a code to use I didn't get the "wait till next year" line! LOL

After performing a map update I no longer get the speed limit sign on my speedometer. I checked my settings and my Road Sign Information is still checked. Suggestions?
