For any new key/remote to work a program/download from Volvo's magic server must happen. That download only works through VIDA, Volvos service, parts, and diagnostic program. The download will tell the car to accept the signal from the new key or remote.
Anyone can purchase a VIDA subscription - So you could purchase an aftermarket key/remote, purchase a VIDA subscription, VIDA will then talk to your car and attempt to have it communicate with the aftermarket product.
