Replacement Key Fob / Key
Hi Guys,
Lost one of our key fobs/keys. 2005 XC90 V8. Was just quoted $662.03 to replace it from my Volvo Dealer. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! OK. Not laughing now. Anyway... has anyone had any luck with the third party key fobs on eBay? I know you need to still get the key cut... and the Volvo Dealer has to program the key/fob, but... seriously? $662!!!
Breakdown of quote (Key+Fob = $358.15 / "Service" to program the key & fob = $238.88 / "Software" that gets installed = $70). Looks like if I purchase a 3rd party key fob online... I am still into $308.88 at my local Volvo Dealer... plus the fee to the locksmith.
If you have had luck with key fobs from eBay - could you post the website/product details?
Cheers,
L76

You can order a precut key from Volvo, with your VIN. Just a plain rubber handled key with no remote. If you order it precut from Volvo and the key does not turn in your locks - you don't have to pay for it. (I've seen many freshly cut keys that do not work) Then have the dealer or a shop (or yourself) with a VIDA subscription program the car to accept the new key.
Then if you want a remote later - the separate triangle shaped remote will work (with programming of course) A used remote cannot be used in another car - unless you have the packaging - the bag - the part came in. There is a code on the bag that is needed to program your car to accept the new remote.
I am a compulsive key looser and so far have lost 2 keys in 5 years even with a lanyard and large coin purse tied on.
So I am looking for an alternative and I would like you opinion on whether you think it would work.
1. Use only the actual key to open the door manually
2. Keep a key and programmed fob inside the car secured by a lanyard. It would stay in the car permanently.
3. If I lose the actual metal key then I could have it replaced at I assume, less than 200 dollars.
4. I am not concerned about security issues.
