Default Sunroof modesty accordion

One of the two "modesty accordions" at the sides of my sunroof fell out the other day. I understand this is a common enough problem. My question is, do I really need to replace it?

The sunroof doesn't leak, and it still works fine mechanically.

Does the accordion actually do anything important? It seems safer to be rid of it, rather than have it fall off again and clunk someone in the head!

I have a 2012 XC60, if the year makes a difference. Thanks!

If its not damaged, it can just be reinstalled. But the part is just cosmetic.

Mine is damaged and I'd like to know where to get one; the passenger side 2013 XC60. Thanks in advance.

Mine keeps falling out. Anyone know a good website where I can get the parts? I would like to replace it myself.
