Default Transmission

2011 XC60, 3.2 FWD. Have had a bearing noise for many months. Changed wheel bearing/hubs. No change. Finally took it to a transmission shop. The carriage bearing on the axle was grinding. We originally thought it was coming from the transmission, so the tranny was pulled to look inside. That is when the carriage bearing was found bad. So, the shop drained burned transmission fluid out of it. They replaced the axle/bearing, so the noise is gone. He suggested that I trade the car since the fluid was burned. He refilled it and it shifts smooth with no noise.

I'm torn about trading it. Obviously in the 96,000 miles on the car; I've had it since 72,000, it has never had a fluid change. Does anyone have experience with changing burned fluid out? Is it as the shop says, get rid of it now, before it does go out? OR is it safe to drive and keep changing it every 30-40k from now on?
