Trunk release
It’s not clear what your problem is, but if you manually lift the tailgate after pressing the latch button it should open. It will not damage the tailgate. Normally, the lift gate is in automatic mode, but the second press of the button puts it in manual mode. Another issue can be that the motorized strut is stuck or not working. Again, you should be able to open it manually by lifting. Lubricate the strut or have it replaced as needed. Sometimes it just gets stuck in cold weather. Lastly, if it is the same as 2014-17 models, the automatic tailgate will open if you hold the trunk release button on the key fob for a few seconds.

My 2011 XC60 back hatch would not open as I had shut it too hard one night. I had to use a pry bar to pop it open so the mechanic could replace the latch/lock. Not pretty, but done carefully you can do it without damaging it.
