Default What size Hex Head for front caliper pins

I have tried everything from 6mm to 10mm to remove the caliper pins on my front brakes. None of them fit. I have no idea what size I should try. My local auto parts dealer said they think it might be 11mm but they are not sure. I can only order that online. I don't mind ordering it but I just don't want to get it and have it be the wrong one. Anybody have any ideas what the exact one might be?

What year is your XC60? Its probably the same as the XC90 which uses a 9mm (some reason many bit kits go from 8 to 10, just like trying to find 16mm and 18mm sockets which Volvo likes to use..

Do you have a Sears or Harbor Freight store near you? There's always Amazon:
Amazon Amazon

For $3 you can afford to be wrong :-)

Sorry, I forgot to put that in. It is a 2013. I did try the 9mm and it was to small.

are you trying to remove a torx bolt or a hex bolt? just make sure you are using the correct bit type. If you've already tried a 10 mm and its too small as well, I'd go to Amazon and find an 11. Also if you have a Lowes by you, they now carry Craftsman tool so you may be able to find something there.

"no job if worth doing if there's no new tool involved" :-)

Sorry the image is so large, it is right from my phone. I tried Lowes they only had up to 10mm. I do see that Homedepot carries it but not in my local area so I can order it. Thanks for the suggestions.

Advanced Auto Parts and Napa online also let you buy online and will ship to your local store same day.

Default Hex bolt size for the 2016 xc 90 front brakes.

After following a bunch of advice on the internet (which was wrong) the front brake hex bolt size is 11mm. I picked one up at Home Depot. This job is incredibly easy once you get that hex bolt socket. Good luck.

So frustrating that Volvo / its suppliers choose such an obscure size for the caliper pins. I replaced front pads and rotors on our 2016 XC60 T6 R-Design (Drive-e 2.0L B4204T9) yesterday and found that I too have the 11mm size. Of course I didn't figure it out until I got into the repair and couldn't wait a day for Amazon to deliver the $6 single socket. Locally neither Advance Auto, Home Depot, Lowes or Ace had the socket in stock, even as part of a set. Autozone did - part of a $30 set though. Just before I left to go buy it I took one more look in my grab bag tool drawer and managed to find a mystery drill bit tool that had a 7/16" hex for the chuck end. Close enough at 11.1125mm to work, and I used an 11mm crow's foot with a 3/8 short breaker bar to turn it. It only penetrated 3mm into the hex pin, but that was enough.

There's a nice fcpeuro video
for the procedure on a P3 XC60 like ours (no year specified) but they had it wrong too. They called for a 9mm hex bolt socket (another obscure size).

I really wish they had selected a more standard size hex bolt, like 10mm....

at least Volvo stayed away from triple square bits. LOL, VW/Audi owners know what I mean.

Default R-design caliper pins

My R-Design Polestar takes a 9mm Allen which is impossible to find so I just cut the rubber boots off and vise-gripped em off and replaced all of it for $30 and the new pins utilized a 10 mm so I won’t have the issue again.

I just did a brake job on a 2019 xc60 that had 322mm front rotors. The hex bolt was a 7mm. Hope that helps someone else.

Default 2015.5 XC60 R-Design Platinum Polestar brakes

My car went through two sets of standard rotors within a year. Both sets warped rather quickly so I then made the decision to pay the extra money and get the slotted and drilled with the ceramic brake pads and didn’t go with the Volvo branded parts this last time and solved my warping problem. That was a year and a half ago and my brake pads aren’t wearing extremely fast either. I think the standard rotors just can’t dissipate heat very well and they just don’t work for the XC60 for some reason.
