hi has anyone else had this error message -

p00bc Mass airflow meter 1 circuit range/performance, airflow too low

just bought the car from over 100 miles away and really like it had a D2 v40 before, anyway the car seems to misfire abit (it still moves though when you put your foot down) and had a bit of smoke come from the back of the engine to the left of the battery the engine on 1 occasion check light has gone off now but still get the turtle and a message saying reduced engine performance, ive had a good look and can not see any leaks or anything that stands out any help or just explanation of whats going on would be great.
