Default XC60 D5 AWD 2010 power tailgate unlocks but doesn’t lift or lower itself

Hi, so after some searching I couldn’t find anyone who has had this issue:

if I press the button for the tailgate either on my key, dashboard on on the boot door itself, the boot lock fires and I can open the boot manually but the power lift doesn’t make any noise and the door doesn’t move itself.
Whe boot takes a fair bit of force to open and close by hand but that is the only way to move it currently.
The button on the inside of the boot door doesn’t do anything to close it either.

the weird thing is that it did this last night then worked after being locked up this morning but now has stopped again

Has anyone got any ideas as to what has caused this? and how to fix it?
I have checked the fuse already sadly to no joy

my plan for tomorrow is to remove the boot interior trim and see if I can access the wiring/motor

thanks in advance!

I can only answer to some basic ideas on this.

There may be a fuse that needs to be replaced.
The lift motor might need replacing.
The signal to the lift motor may not be getting through. Maybe a lose cable or connector.

Of those, checking the fuse is easiest and cheapest.

Similar problem here on a 2012 XC60 T6.
I was unable to get to my car for many months due to COVID border controls. I disconnected the battery before leaving it.
On return everything looked good and the car started first time and passed the registration inspection without issue, however the tailgate is misbehaving. At first I though this was simply a low voltage battery but I have checked this and it appears ok.
My tailgate does not lift when I unlock it from the key (the lock works as expected) but it will lift about 30% if I press the button below the wiper. I then have to manually open it the rest of the way. Similarly closing only works for a short distance and then has to be completed manually.
I am worried that forcing the tailgate open/closed may be doing some damage as it is very stiff as I guess I am manually shifting the hydraulic fluid that is supposed to be pressured by the pump.
No sign of fluid leaks or any other obvious issue. As it works partially I do not think this is a fuse.
I have heard of others replacing structs, motors etc without resolving the issue so hoping that others might give me some ideas.

Default Xc60 tailgate not opening

Same issue my mechanic took it all apart and it seemed the motor that powers the hydraulic oil in the power strut was faulty i tried every breaker know to man and could not find 1, however volvo could supply £1800. Lol, i said sod that i went on to struts depot paid £24 now it is manual life far more practical for me as i put tools in the boot

Thanks so much. Any idea what they did to convert? Presumably removed the hydraulic struts and "just" put gas dampers in their place?
[Edit] Just went to their website and saw this: https://www.strutsdepot.com/product/e075/ which I guess does the job. Did you do the work yourself? Any advice on what to do about the hydraulic circuit?

Interesting. This was the reply I got from Struts Depot:"I'm afraid you cant just replace power assisted gas struts with the manually assisted ones. You will need to replace them with the same type as what you currently have on the vehicle."
For clarification, I have a 2012 model which appears to have electrically operated hydraulic(?) struts on each side. There is a small control unit under the trim cover in the tailgate. There is no separate hydraulic pump.

My logic says that as long as the gas struts are the correct length and are powerful enough to lift the tailgate (and not too powerful for it to be closed by hand) they should do the job. At the price I recon I'll give this a go.

Just to conclude my experience, I ordered some standard gas struts which were the correct length but came with 13mm ball joint ends where the car has 10mm. My eBay supplier provided the correct ball joints by return of post at no charge and I am delighted with the results. I can now open the boot with a single finger and, although it requires a little more than this to close, it is much easier than pushing against the damaged hydraulic struts. And so much less expensive that the Volvo parts!
Removing the old struts was straightforward, although I did end up removing the entire cosmetic panel from the boot lid interior which was a simple matter of removing two torx screws on either side plus a couple more inside the pull-down handle. This allowed me to disconnect the wiring from the control unit without simply cutting the cables.

Smile XC 60 2012, 2013 tail gate operation

Hey, My XC60 2012, 2013 model; the tailgate goes up by about 30cm at a time and down 30 cm at a time. The remote tailgate button, the close button in the tailgate and the open button on the dash all work but the tail gate only moves 30cm at a time so i have to press the button 4 or 5 times for the tailgate to totally open or close. Any ideas will be appreciated
Thanks
Jeremy

Default liftgate sluggish

I too am looking for an answer to this problem. In 2022 I bought a 2017 xc60 with 120k miles. First thing I did was replace the timing belt. However it soon became apparent that the liftgate struggled to open. It would unlock, rise an inch and slam shut. I had the same mechanic replace both struts. It worked fine for a while, and now a year later is back to its old tricks. I actually don't drive or use the hatch much, so it's not wear and tear. I will go back to that mechanic, but first I want to try to scare up some alternative ideas on why this is happening. Any suggestions are appreciated.

To clarify its behavior: when trying to open the liftgate via the key fob remote or inside button, the liftgate struggles to open. When using the latch ON the liftgate, it opens fine. It closes properly.
