Default 1998 w/ transmission computer issues - need spare

I just picked up a '98 XC70 w/ 140k on it for $650. PO said it was driveable a very short distance, then car goes into neutral. I drove it 10 miles home with no issues.

I suspect the transmission computer and want to pick up a spare so I can drive it until it does it again - then swap in to verify the problem. Do I need the exact part number match? The number I'm looking for is P09459755, but no luck on ebay, although other numbers are listed.

If I can't get the part in the US, is there anyone on the forums in Europe that would be willing to find & ship (with payment, obviously)?

Any codes on the TCM?
If not I would not suspect the TCM I would suspect the tranny itself.

I don't know. I didn't take it to a shop, yet. I was looking into getting a code reader. I already have an OBD2 scanner - will that read transmission codes?

What about PC based readers? They are available on ebay for $35. I saw the BSR tool, but it doesn't read 70 series 98-00.

Nope the scanner will not.
Some laptop ones will but you have to read through them.
Check here.

Thanks Tech. I always look forward to your helpful replies. BTW, I just had a '99 XC70 dropped off with overheat/head gasket issue (traded 850 wagon for). I was able to start & move the car w/o strange noises from the engine bay.....so I'm up to 7 Volvos temporarily.

Was it cheaper in the link I sent you?
The exact one is in that link.

They are two different scanners. I looked for another because the one in the link you gave had limited coverage of '99 and '00 (esp V70R) models.

So the scan tool arrived today....and it looks like it only reads 2001+ Volvo TCM codes. So why do you suspect the tranny? Thanks in advance!

I almost forgot to mention I picked up a '98 V70 AWD with engine misfiring issues, but no transmission issues = full set of spares for the above XC70. I'm thinking carry all the electronic bits to swap in when the transmission does its thing again.

These transmissions are known to stop working after they get warm. Then work fine cold.

Update on the car: So far, so good. My daughter's been driving it locally, about 10 miles max per trip. The transmission acted up once, so she put it back in gear and it was fine. I've driven it, too, and it seems okay. My plan is to drive it until it becomes unreliable, then swap my spare in it.
