Default 1998 XC-70 acting like a bucking bronco

This is my 6th Volvo, my first 5 cylinder, grew up working on cars under the shade tree.
Driving back from Tampa Friday, the car started acting like a wild pony on steriods. Black smoke would be left behind this crazy ride until I found that between 2 and 3k rpm's it would settle down and act nice. Got it home, let it cool down and there she sits. Looks great, like it wants to go for another ride, so do I. But not until I have some ideas on where to start the trouble shooting.

Yes the check engine light is on again. When I first bought this car 2 years ago it was on, maybe about 5 months ago it went off and stayed off until this past Friday. When disconnected from the battery and then reconnected, the light stays off and it might run well for a while. Tried this in order to get to the parts store for a scan reading. It sat overnight at a mortgage business (that didn't fix it either so no bailouts there). Traffic the next morning caused me to limp on home on the side of the road a few times.

Any ideas on where to start other than having it towed. Not sure who to trust to work on it. The last encounter was over a faulty connection to the fuel pump. The shop wanted $1700.00 to replace it--CASH. Needless to say, I've been asked not to go back there. Really wish I didn't total out my 94 940 Turbo wagon.

Thanks

Where are you located?
Maybe the Mass Flow sensor is bad. But the best thing is to know what codes are in there.

Thanks for the reply,
I live in Ocala, Fl.
Got a scan code yesterday--PO243--Turbo gate valve solenoid malfunction. Went by what might be a good shop with the 93 240 wagon. Spoke with owner and was told the code can encompass several things. Called IPD and was told the same. Also was informed that this code is not representative of the problem. Shop wanted to see the car, so on the drive there with the pony it died. Foul smelling smoke was coming from the turbo section of the engine compartment--smelled like a candle wick after blowing out the flame. Car will now not start and run.
Is it time to saddle up a newer xc-70?

Did an intercooler hose blow off or blow out?

Got the pony to the shop yesterday. First thing they had to do was charge the battery, which is two years old this month. Maybe there is a cell going out. I had to charge it up Sunday, it lost it's charge without being connected to the car. Hopefully this is an entire different problem.

Anyway, received a call from the shop owner this PM. Seems that the car runs better without the MAS/MAF connected. He wants to replace this item and then see how things are. This doesn't explain to me why the smoke and smell of burning candle wax from the turbo area.

Haven't completely checked for a hose issue yet, but I have looked in and around the areas for one. Had this issue a while back with the top one. But will mention it to the shop.

I'm not so sure I want to throw parts at this car to see if this idea works or doesn't. So the idea of the MAS/MAF replacement doesn't give me the warm fuzzies.

I would like to thank you guys for the assistance.

If the MAF went bad and it was running way to rich that might have caused the smoke.
