Broke timing belt on 2.4L turbo. Exhaust timing gear mark is on the back side of gear. The intake mark is on the front side of the gear. Is this correct? Both gears have a "M" on them. I replaced the belt and it runs rough. Also missing on cylinder 4.

 

There is a timing mark on the outside of the exhaust cam as well.

But most likely you have bent valves.

 

I thought that the 2.4L would not allow the valve to come into contact with the piston.
cylinder 123&5 are firing. Number 4 has no compression. Is it worth pulling the head and replacing the valve?

 

Is it possible that the exhaust cam is off enough to cause cylinder 4 to have an open valve at the wrong time. I pulled the spark plugs and they are black, not white like they should be. Cylinder 4 is new and no carbon residue at all.

 

I am 99% sure #4 valves are bent.
When the belt breaks the valves bend. Not sure who told you the 2.4's don't bend valves but all the white engines (aluminum block) bend valves when the belt breaks.

Sorry yes replace bent ones.

 

I was hoping for a miracle, and that would have been "no bent valves". I'll pull the head
and replace the bent valves. The timing marks must be correct because only cylinder 4 is not firing and has no compression. Thanks, glad I found this forum.

 

There is a post about making a cam lock tool. That shuold really be made and used when doing it. Then when you remove the exhaust pulley the VVT one remove the belt with the cams locked. Then turn the pulley all the way foward and mark the pulley and cam cover. Then turn it all the way back and do the same thing. Then line it up normal and mark again. This way when you put it back together it will be marked and you won't have to do the PITA special setup to get the pulley in the proper position.
