Default 2002 transmissions vs. newer models

Hey everybody,
I've got an 02 xc70 with 130K on it and the transmission is about to go out on it for a second time. I just got back from my mechanic and says it will cost about 5k to fix. I don't think I can justify putting that kind of money into a car this old but am thinking about getting something a little newer like an 05-07 model. I've read the transmissions have fewer issues but my mechanic is telling me to steer clear of xc70s all together. Any advice from the experts out there? PS-I am not drag racing or towing motor homes with it.

Talk to a Volvo mechanic. I know of a volvo penta salesman who has put astronomical mileages on his 2007 xc70. His current car has around 300k with little more than rigorous maintenance. My experience with my 960 and xc90 are the same. I would just buy what you want, take care of it, and unless you have a lemon it will last you for a very long time.

Well, haven't heard of much of any problems with trans in fwd models. Some of the older awd owners have disconnected prop shaft to convert to fwd when they have had trans issues. Myself I have a 98 v70 awd with 190k miles and no apparent issues yet (knock on wood). With the miles you're talking about, don't know why you'd be talking about trans failure a second time.

I asked my V- dealer a few days back about the trans problems as mine is at 108k and he said the problems arise when someone FLUSHES them and damages the seals in the valve body and I have read a few posts about failure just after flushing! I bought an expensive extended warranty on mine just for the trans and will have them give it the once over with a fine tooth comb just before the 12/12 expires in December!
I learned MANY years ago the the word "MECHANIC" should not be taken as someone who can work on anything!...When I own something exotic and choose to pay for the work, then I find someone who at least works on exotic cars! I took the SL to a man named "Hans" who always has XKEs and Rolls in the lot and I was confident He would be good with the SL. I will take the Volvo to him eventually since He's 5 miles away and the v-dealer is 40 mi. away.
