Default 2004 XC70 lost power to accessories while driving

While driving our 2004 XC-70, on two occasions transmission has made abrupt downshift and lost AC, wipers, windows, dash readouts, turn signals, plus airbag light on, random incorrect warning lights, like door open warning when door was latched.

Our European car car mechanic sent off dash cluster to get rebuilt, as it had been having problems with clock and some other read outs for some time, and he thought this might be the issue. Dash was then fully functional, but then it happened again. Now my wife is afraid to drive the car on long trips, which is mainly we use this car for.

This always happens on interstate and after car has been driving for a while, twice in heavy rain, so no wipers were an issue. Car remains running, and when restarted after sitting a bit, all functions are operational, except air bag warning still on.

Does anyone have any clues of what to look for? Mechanic thinks it might be a bad relay, or something over heating and shutting off, but says he is not aware of this being a normal problem with this year and model. I do my own work on my work trucks and other older vehicles, but have limited experience with newer more complicated systems. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like the common CEM overheating symptoms, In the attached link read what Xemodex sees as common failures and what they do to eliminate them
