99 xc70 Fuel Gage-need help

My fuel gage is acting erratic, it will go up at start up, then drop mid way, goes back up....then drops entirely to redline. Any ideas on what may be causing this? Thanks in advance.

Bad wire and/or connector. You can access the wires and connector at the tank through the access panel in the rear floor. Check for continuity of the level.
