Default code P0089 car runs out of fuel

Hello all, i have a 2005 XC70, recently when the fuel tank is below 1/3 the check engine light comes on with code P0089, shortly after that the car sputters and will stall and not start. It acts like its running out of fuel. Fill the tank up, car starts and runs fine, and check engine light will go out. This has happened a number of times, and If i let the tank go below 1/3 it will and always happens. At this time, I keep the car above 1/2 a tank and no problem. The car runs very well, no other issues. Just passed an etest, changed all filters including fuel filter. Any ideas, or suggestions would be appreciated.

I am trying to work through this and am thinking of possibilities. As this car has a plastic tank which is basically split into two halfs and has a hose running from one side to the other, could this hose be off inside the tank and not be picking up fuel from the left side? Would this set a code?

Any thoughts and comments are really appreciated

Thanks very much

Your thought about the internal hose makes a lot of sense. Have you run your idea past any Volvo mechanics?
