i have two problems that may or may not be related? first i just bought a new to me 2003 xc70 with 105000 miles on it and picked it up late saturday and after the first fill up i noticed a strong gas smell. upon further inspection there is gas leaking down the drivers side of the fuel tank, which stops when below a half tank. i have not taken the cover off to look yet but i am assuming that at some point in the past the fuel pump was replaced and they did not seal it right. also there is a strange noise coming from the engine compartment that sounds as if it is coming from just on the other side of the drivers side wheel. almost sounds like an electric pump of some sort. after you shut the car off it will cycle on and off on for 2 sec then off for maybe 10-15 sec repeat does this for a couple of minutes. any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance for having such a helpful forum.

 

The gas leak is proabaly from the transfer pump on the driver side. Check at your local dealer if the pump has been replaced recently. As far as the noise, not to sure.
