Erratic XC70 gas gauge

Erratic XC70 gas gauge
My 2008 XC70 wagon has a gas gauge that displays erratic "miles to empty" values. I can sometimes return home after a 110 mile trip with more "miles to empty" than when I started. The problem seems to be related to traveling up and down hills. I took it to the dealer, who replaced the appropriate software, but the problem remains. What could cause this?
