I've noticed several times in my 2005 XC70 that while backing up my brake pedal gets hard and it's very difficult to stop. I've found the e-brake works very effectively, but relying on the brake pedal for any quick stopping is nearly impossible.

I know some vehicles have brake adjusters which kick in when braking in reverse. Could this be an issue relating to something like that?

Has anybody else experienced this issue?

That is very weird. They do not have an adjuster that works like you explained above.
The e-brake is separate from the caliper.

 

I had the brake system inspected by my mechanic and, other than worn out front pads, he said everything looked great. He put in new pads. The problem still happens exactly the same after the brake job. Has anybody else had this problem?
