Default Looking for info on XC series

Ok I am looking for a used XC.... No im not in the wrong area.

I need to know the details on the XC as compared to something like the V70 (station wagon)

When did the XC start production, what was the key elements which make the XC better than the standard V70
I am mostly interested in a standard transmission but is there different engine configurations which I should consider or stay away from.

Is there a particular year or model I should be looking at or staying away from.

What are the typical problems with the XC lineup.

How is the tiptronic transmission... did I get this right? I would prefer standard but they are hard to find

Any and all recommendations are welcome.

I am a father of 2 young girls and a wonderful wife. I am hard core import, owning, Toyota, Honda, VW and loyal to the old Volvo, Since my father had 3.

I want the safest best vehicle with storage room and something which can take me all year round in a Northern Ontario COLD, SNOWY climate. I currently own a Jeep Grand cherokee. Its a beast on fuel at 17mpg.

What can I expect as a typical MPG for the vehicle you would recommend?

Interested in
XC70?? or V70 if the differences are slim
Standard transmission
Fuel efficiency
comfortable, not luxurious
Station wagon
Alloy wheels
air cond

As you can see I am a Volvo nubie but bear with me and I will listen and learn taking notes attentively.

Many thanks in advance
