Unhappy Semi-Urgent...Dead MAF???

Folks, I need a bit of quick help here. The wife's 01 XC70 started acting weird today. It started and idled fine and was driving smoothly when she was going to work. She floored it to pass and it had no real power or pick up. After that it idled and drove roughly, no power, and if floored would not go above 4000 RPM under load. Check engine light came on and code was P1171. She got it home and it I was able to verify the problem.

I tried cleaning the MAF with CRC MAF cleaner, and now I can start it but if you don't feed it gas, it will not stay running. If you floor it at idle it will not go above 4000 RPM and if you take your foot off the gas, it simply dies. It will start right back up again, but will not idle or stay running at all unless you hold your foot on it, and then it idles roughly.

Everything I have read points to the MAF, (P1171 code, 4000 RPM symptom, etc) but before I spend $130 and change, I want to know if I am looking at the right thing.

Thanks,

Glenn

I think the writing is on the wall..by description alone sounds exactly like MAF is going

Ok, I think I confirmed a dead MAF. After my first post, I went out and disconnected the MAF and started the car. It started up, stayed running, and idled smoothly. It would rev up to 4000 RPM (still no more) but would return to a smooth idle when you let off the gas.

I plugged the MAF back in and it idled a little rougher, and as soon as you revved it it would bog a bit and if you let off the gas it would die.

Disconnected the MAF, smooth again.

My question now is this.....Can I drive it with the MAF disconnected until the new part comes in?

I guess you can but it still might act weird when driving it.
