Default Timing belt won't fit.

Strange situation. I recently purchased 2004 Volvo x70 with 210,000 miles on it. So I'm doing the normal things changing transmission fluid oil and the sticker on the engine says the timing belt was changed last at 149,000 miles. So I ordered the Aisin timing belt kit based on my engine serial number. 3399470 . The kit has the tensioner with the long forks that fit on either side of square notch on the engine block. So I go to install the new kit and to my surprise when I go to remove the old tensioner I realize it's the old style tensioner for serial numbers up to 318 xxx. I double check the sticker on the timing belt cover... And just in case that was replaced from a junkyard and has the wrong serial number I'll check the stamp on the engine and indeed it is 3399470. Now for what I understand these parts are not interchangeable. So I go ahead with the install and install the new idler pulley and the new tensioner new water pump etc and when it's finally time for me to put the belt back on I can't get it to fit even with the tensioner turned almost all the way to the left still can't get that belt on and I don't know what to do. Interesting note, the position of the tab of the old shirt fork tensioner was all the way to the right and my car I've been sitting for 2 days waiting for this kit, so it was cold.... Anyway has anyone else ever run into this situation before, should I purchase the other style tensioner and try that?..
