Default Tensioner Pulley for Timing Belt

I had the timing belt replaced on our 2004 XC90 last fall, and the tech used a Contitech Timing Belt kit to do the work. Now we are being told that the tensioner pulley is broken, and that it needs to be replaced. I am trying to find out if the tensioner pulley is part of the Contitech kit, because, if so, we are going to discuss this work being covered under the mechanic's warranty. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

What's the part number on the kit? Or where did he source the kit? If it didn't come with the kit, he should have bought it separately and replaced it anyway. If it failed, you are probably looking at more than just a new tensioner,

I spoke with the mechanic again, and what he said is that this is the tensioner pulley for the serpentine belt, which is different from the timing belt work he did last year. Seems like this is a totally separate issue.

Ah yes, that would not normally be replaced during replacement of the timing belt.

It is probably not the belt tensioner but the idler wheel and bearing.

The idler bearing was used in 1983-1997 Volvo 850 and 1998 Volvo S/V70.
After that the idler was eliminated, the the serpentine belt tension was accomplished by a single mechanical tensioner that uses a Torx key to loosen.

My apology to @tony1963, IDLER pulley is still used in 2.5T.

So when you buy the TB kit, it includes:
- TB itself
- Tensioner Pulley (which is a combo of spring and pulley)
- Idler Pulley

Buy it from Volvo dealer, it is OEM and cheaper than aftermarket.
About $110 or so.
