Volvo extended warranty on certified pre-owned - is it worth it?
I'm buying a 2004 XC70 which has 40k miles. The warranty goes to 2010 or 100k. I have the option of extending the warranty to 2012 for $1175. Those two years have a $100 deductable. Is this worth the price? The car will be 8 years old by that time so I'm leaning toward extending it.
IMO that seems like a bargain. Its not so expensive that you would feel ripped off if you never used it, but if you did need to use it, would clearly pay for itself. I've heard of some warranties costing much more than that.
Just curious, does that extended warranty cover parts and labor of ALL parts or is it limited to powertrain? Either way it sounds like a deal.

I'm not sure. This coverage is the VIP service offered by APCO (automobile protection corporation). It has 1.5 pages of parts covered in the brochure, it even says it covers taxes and fluids. Funny it doesn't say anything about labor. It's not possible that they would charge for labor is it?
It doesn't cover normal maintenance, squeaks, rattles, leaks, aftermarket CD players, exterior metal, upolstery or trim.

My 2002 V70XC required some expensive repairs after the factory warranty ran out. This included engine mounts, transfer case leaks and power steering rack replacement, all to the tune of over $4500. I had an aftermarket policy, but the company'sunderwriter went bankrupt. That was $2200 down the hole! I did find another company that wrote policies for older Volvos (12/100K, basically everything), for another $3100. I plan to keep the car for some time, so it's less than buying a new Volvo. My new Prius has a factory extended warranty (10yr/100K),purchased on the PriusChat list through a dealer in MA. The cost was $950, less than half the dealer price.
The bottom line is to read the fine print carefully. If your policy doesn't mention labor, it's probably not covered. $1100 sounds a bit low, And, like my case, the chance of bankruptcy is always a possibility. Caveat Emptor........

I called up the woman up and she told me the coverage is the same as the TotalCare offered at the time of purchase with the only difference being that after the original warranty expires I will have to pay a $100 deductable per visit. She says the Totalcare covers labor. The one thing that worries me is that she doesn't have a contract for me to sign. I feel like I should insist on some contract that states exactly what is covered and what isn't because all I have right now is a brochure. She's forcing me into an awkward situation and I really don't appreciate it. If my wife wasn't in love with this car I'd probably cancel the whole thing.
Seems a little funny if they don't have you sign a contract. I would insist.
Sounds like a Best Buy kind of sales person. They'll say anything to get you to buy an extended service plan, like telling you "if it breaks, just come in and grab a new one off the shelf and youre done". So you buy it. Then when it does break, you find out that you have to send it in and wait two weeks for it to get fixed. That only if it breaks 3 times, or if it costs more to fix than replace do they *give you your money back* which might be less than the price of a new one. That's when you find out that the salesperson told you a lie and that its not company policy to do that, and that they are not liable. Sorry, bad experience.
Anyway, when I bought an extended warranty for my old Accord, I had to sign an agreement.

Everything in writing; always in writing;your natural instinct is right. Don't buy a "cold-call" warranty.Extended warranties are good insurance and usually must be purchased while car is under manufacturer warranty. A good dealership should be able to help.
Remember if the pressure is on with no hardcopy to back it its most likely B.S.

IF it is CPO + VIP extension it is well worth it... if claims applies u will get a free rental car to drive and in most case a few claims u will get your money back
I know this is probably too late but when ever I'm buying an after market warranty-- look for a named exclusion policy-- they tell what they won't cover. Best example of this is the type you get from Carmax.
This is an old thread but ... the Volvo VIP plan is now available directly from EasyCare (APCO - Automobile Protection Corpaoration).
Take a look:

and now,
http://www.easycare.com/ExtendedWarranties.aspx
Same coverage, but direct. It's not cheap, but it's Volvo's coverage, as opposed to a risky 3rd party internet or dealer offered plan.
