Default When did "Networking" happen?

First time poster - considering purchase of first Volvo - "moo" (ever heard John-Boy and Billy?)

I've heard that after the 1998 model year the V70XC was "networked" (all computers tied together) and that the networked cars require brand new computers / modules when they go out - and an expensive trip to the dealership. Question is: when exactly did that take place? 1999? Early or late year? Etc?
Reason for question is I am looking at 1998 and 1999 V70XC's for purchase and want to get a non-networked car. Am very interested in a particular 1999 right now.
Thanks.

If you do not want a networked car only buy a 1998. All the 1999 cars were networked.
