XC70 transmission starting to slip
I have a 2002 xc70 and just started to notice the transmission slipping. For instance, I will go from reverse to drive on a slope and when I let the brake off, start to roll backward a few feet before the transmission engages and then thunk, start going forward. Or today, going over a speed bump, it slipped then dropped back into gear with a thunk. Anyone else had this happen? What was the fix? Whole new tranny?
What's the mileage? Check the color of the fluid. If the mileage is over 100k and the fluid is near black then you probably need a rebuild. You can flush the fluid and reflash the computer on the trans but it maybe too late to repair it. It's about $3000 to rebuild it.

The car was a lease up to 60K miles and I believe a tranny flush and fill was done at 50K. However, I am now at 80K and its looking pretty black. I plan to do a flush and fill myself and take it to dealer for latest software update and see if I can drag a few more miles out of it before rebuild (after reviewing numerous other posts on this site, that seems to be the consensus).
Yes sounds like you are on borrowed time. I just got another quote for a rebuild on my 2000 XC70 - $1500-1600 for basic rebuild, $700 for Valve Body, and $200 for Torque Converter. And this is if I bring the transmission to the rebuilder. Not what I wanted to hear.
I have a 2002 XC70 with 98,000 miles that has been experiencing the same issue for the last year/10K miles. Have done the tranny flush every 30K knowing this year is a weak tranny. I have also been told that 01-02's also have a design flaw in the casing that wears excessively and can let pressure through. We've owned it since 20K miles(2002). When mine does go out I'll be doing a complete swap. More expensive, but the car is immaculate and have no problem sinking thousands into it. :-) Not happy about it, but its the kind of car that's worth it in my opinion. I'm new here and have lots to read and catch up on, but wanted to chime in since I'm in the same boat with the 02 tranny.
