We just bought a 2004 XC90 2.5T, luckily from a reputable dealer. Unfortunately after a couple hours of driving it the first day we hear a thump, some clicking, and the front end loses power. No lights in the dash, gauges don't work, and car goes into "limp home mode". Obviously we called the dealer who had us bring it in, sent us home with a cross country and had a Volvo dealer fix it. We were told a module was replaced and that the car was 100% for sure fixed. Obviously we were relieved.

But on the way home, it does it again. About 1/2 hour into our drive, it's like the whole computer system crashes. This was at night, on the highway so I consider this very dangerous.

Now that I start Googling, I'm finding that this is a very common problem with 2004 XC90. We're taking it back to the dealer this morning and hoping for the best. But we've lost all faith in the car now, and from what we've read people with similar problems haven't been able to find the source of the problem & get it fixed for good.

So I'm turning to all of you on the forums, anyone hear of this and a successful repair? Any advice or tips on how to handle this or what it might be?

We're SO bummed. We wanted an XC90 for years and went through so many hoops to find one we loved. Now it seems we ended up with a lemon....
