You need gas and spark.
In the old days, you could pull a fuel injector to see if you are getting gas while cranking. You should see/smell gas in the cylinder (remove spark plug) after unsuccessfully starting.
Not sure how to check spark... in the old days, pull a plug wire, stick a screwdriver in it and hold it near the engine block while cranking. These days, spark will not occur if the flywheel sensor is disconnected... computer doesn't know when to fire.
If the timing belt was mis-aligned, would probably mis-fire and possibly run, but both would be ROUGH.

Thanks i have tried all that with no sucess so far .I have even brought engine up on TDC and statrted to go both ways from their to see what i am missing ,meaning going a couple teeth off alignment marks each way and carefully hand cranking engine to ensure no valve interferance prior to engine cranking over with starter. still no sucess just not enough hours in the day to get everything done.

I'm having the same problem with an '04 XC90 T6 as well. Rebuilt head, new gasket set and timing components. Lined up all timing marks using the Volvo specific tool to align the camshafts and cam gears. Cranked it, no start. Sprayed starter fluid at the same time someone turns the ignition switch, turns on. But turns off the moment the I stop the starter fluid into the intake.
I started thinking fuel pump crapped out on me. But what are the chances of pump going bad when it was working fine when it blew the headgasket.
Stumped at this point. Anyone any clues?
