Default 2006 x90

Greetings Fellow Volvites!

I have a 2006 XC90 2.5, and I adore it. I bought it used in October after my beloved V70 committed suicide that last very Indian Summer day we had in the Chicago area. Anyway, the XC90 was a single owner vehicle that had been taken excellent care of minus a few dings and scrapes that I can have buffed and a broken armrest which my Great Big Dog would have taken down by himself, so I was thrilled. It drives like a dream.
The error light is telling me that the skid control something or other needs to be looked at, and I should know the wording by heart because I see it constantly, but my mechanic told me as soon as he plugged the computer in to it, that code brought up a few other codes that had to do with the anti lock brakes, but the brakes themselves were brand new - so he referred me to the Volvo dealer for the codes but I am not concerned at the moment about that issue. It needs a strut in the back replaced and some new rear tires, but it checked out great other that those minor issues.
About a month ago, I noticed when I started the car, the sound coming from the engine was akin to what I describe as a fan blade hitting the side of something hard, like when you brush against your ceiling fan while it is running, and also a good description would be a lawnmower running over something hard. It sounds like it is coming more from the driver's side than the mid or passenger, and it seemed to be on a FREEZING cold day. I lasted for about 3 seconds and stopped. I noticed I had left the blower for the heater on midway. So, if I leave the blower on at all, the engine makes that awful sound; if I make sure it is off before turning off the engine, it doesn't make the noise, although this afternoon there was a 'hint' of a noise from that area when I started it, but I was parked at an odd angle and immediately continued to back away in that position with the wheels turned oddly. I am obviously going to have to take it in and have it looked at, but does anyone have any similar experiences with this horrific sound or any ideas? I don't know what parts are in that area, but it makes sense it the blower is there!
I will also mention that my AC does not blow cold air. I noticed this the day I bought the car, but it was already cold at that point so I moved that to a Spring repair. I am hoping that is just a simple repair like a charge is needed, because the compressor in the V70 died and the defrost didn't work well - the defrost works wonderfully in the XC90. That is on the mechanic list as well. So maybe there is a correlation between that and this noise. I will find out, but again, just wanted any thoughts. I would like to gather some ideas so I can start thinking about how much this is going to cost me. I have a 2K dental appointment in the morning, and I would so, SO rather be spending that on the Volvo.
Thanks for any input!
