Default 2007 XC90 problem

I just gave my 2007 XC 90 for a 72.5K service today at a local dealer in northern NJ. The guy calls back saying that the back of the car has an issue and requires an Active On demand coupler (AOC) and Final Drive (rear differential). He quoted a price of $4000.

I like the car very much and have had no issues to date. In the esteemed experience of the members here, is the $4000 price too high to change both things? Is it just a dealer being a dealer (he was pushing me to trade it in and buy a new one)?

Any one know of any good Volvo expert mechanics in Northern NJ?

There does seem to be a sound coming from the back.

Any advice would be appreciated.

diffs very often last the life of the car unless they leak fluid and are run in that condition. if it were bad it would probably be making noise.

$4000 from a dealer sounds like a steal. The AOC costs more than that by itself. I just had mine replaced at the dealer and it costs me more than $5K just for the AOC. Now they want me to replace the rear diff.
