Our XC90 seems to be having some steering issues.

While my wife was driving, she stated that the steering wheel was making a clicking sound, and hard to turn.

The steering wheel then semi locked. She could not turn left at all, and only had the ability to turn right.

I was unable to replicate the same issue, however in the steering column, it sounds like a binding or twisting sound.

I’ve spent most of my life on boats, and the only thing I can equate it to is when the the hydraulics malfunction or get bound up.

Any ideas?

did you check for any leaks in the power steering rack? is the fluid level in the PS pump reservoir ok?

 

Just a thought...... I've a a few problems with different v70,XC70,XC90's having an "intermittent" tightness in the steering. 'Turned out to be the steering 'knuckle" (steering shaft U-joint that you find down close tot he rack on an XC90) was binding. A good shot (really tuff to get at) spray lubricant (good quality stuff- not WD40)) on the knuckle may help ; - before you get into swapping more expensive parts.
