2013 XC90 - 2nd row seats do not fold flat

2013 XC90 - 2nd row seats do not fold flat
My brother just purchased an XC90 and despite being told the seats fold flat we're struggling to do so and as its been bought as something to sleep in occasionally on the road its a little disappointing as its more a sloped surface with all the seats down. However I wonder if we are missing something. Do the seat bolsters flip forward?
We do have the seats as far back as they will go and there's also a gap in the floor between the 3rd row and second row. Is that correct?

check the owners manual to start. Make sure there's no additional positions like sliding the bench forward/back (our Highlander does this) and nothing is stuck in the seating (child's toy etc.)
