Default 2017 Xc90 T6 engine

Had a cylinder head fail, need to buy a new or lightly used engine block. Which model year T5’s are compatible with the T6 twin charger? Is there compatibility across the XC, S, V 80 60 40 SUV and car lineup from the same generation, assuming it’s either a T5 or T6?

check out car-part.com to source a replacement head - the site usually also lists compatible years/models for a given part. Is there a reason you want to source a whole block vs just the head? FYI, you may want to check out Erie Vo Vo (correct spelling) who's a recycle yard in upstate NY that specializes in Volvos. You can probably give them a call to ask as well.

gave them a call and was told they are different. Volvo tech at the dealership said they are the same.

for example:
T5 uses the same tranny and charger mount points. Dimensions and displacement equal. Is the T6 reinforced? Different build? Or just added twin charger. Just not clear. Nobody has encountered this? Low miles T5 engine is $3k. High miles T6 is $8k.

do you need the block as well or can you just source a used head and have a machine shop check for flatness, check guides for tolerances etc? Also to note, the engine codes tell you the basic configuration and design iteration. For example, a B4204T9 means its a gasoline engine, 4 cylinder, 2.0L displacement, 4 valves per cylinder, Turbo, 9th iteration. you can find what iteration your engine is via a sticker on the timing belt cover, a stamping in the block on the firewall side of #1 or possibly on a build plate on the fender/firewall etc. So if you have a B4204T20, Its quite possible a similar iteration like a B4204T21 would use the same head or would be a bolt on fit.

It is obvious once you see it thank you for the clarification here. Mechanics say whole new engine.

Do you know of documentation to clarify the iteration changes? Too much to expect in 2022?
