I have been hearing a whining/ groaning / growling sound while accelerating and yesterday i finally pinned it down. When i turn on the ac i get an odd sound and then the groaning that i am talking about.

What would this be? Would it cause further damage? what would it likely cost to get replaced?

I have the same thing....interested to learn what it is. I hope the compressor isn't going out.

 

Did you open the hood and see if the sound is coming from the compressor? I would also check to see if the tension on the belt is good. It does not necessarily have to be the compressor. it can also be the tensioner since there is increased stress when the AC compressor is on.
