Default Another Oil Change Question?????

Does anybody know if I can you change the oilf filter without draining the oil? Without making a mess? (2006 XC90 2.5) I received my new oil filter wrench that I did not have for my first change.

Also, How important is it to change the crushing ring every time? I reused it once so far without leakage.......

I don't know for your car in particular, but I'd expect that to make a mess.

I was scratching my head fora while. Why would you want to change the filter and not the oil. Perhaps you have an extended life oil? I don't see the point in changing one and not the other (for the mess aspect and the time and the PITA). I imagine you will spill a considerable amount of oil regardless by removing the filter cartridge. But if you must, you must. Try jacking the front end up high which should tip the oil toward the back of the oil pan. That should limit the mess. You'll still lose around a quart (my guess) from the cartridge.

As for the aluminum crush washer. You shouldn't see any problems with reusing it once or twice, but its good to have a spare handy just in case.

I think he was saying he didn't have a wrench to remove the filter, but drained out the oil and replenished it with new oil without changing the filter. Now he has filter wrench but the oil is still fairly new.

I agree with fast ride, I think there's usually about 1/2 quart of oil in the filter cartridge and with it tipped back there might not be as much right above the filter location in the sump. (By the way, this should be obvious but the filter placement is different on different vehicles, just make sure the filter is at the highest point of the sump.) No matter what though, I'd expect some spillage. There's been times when I've been trying to change my oil quickly so I unscrew the filter right after the plug and there's quite a bit of spillage. It's definitely not as messy to have at least some of the oil drained out before pulling the filter.

Good luck though. Just keep rags handy. I usually park over a large flattened cardboard box too just in case oil spills to the floor.

Bingo 99Volvo70, could not get the filter housing off and could not find the wrench locally. I planned on about a 2K mile change.

I hear of folks running sythetics , which I do, and just changing the filters at certain intervals and adding oil as needed on various vehicles. It can't be that messy or people would not be doing this. I typically do a 5K mile change oil and filter with synthetics.

Be sure to let us know how messy it is if you go for it. [8D]

Oil is cheap and go ahead and change it again! I change my oil change freq to 5K instead of the 7500 because it is easier for my little brain to keep track. I know everytime the odometer hit 5 or 0 on the third window, I change oil! I don't have to count 7500, 15000,22500, 30000, 37500, 45000...... Plus more freq change got to be better!

Finally tried it, changing the filter without draining the oil. Pulled the car up on ramps and over some cardboard to move oil to rear and contain any mess. It went well, no copious amounts of oil drainage. It was still messy, the filter housing leaked maybe a 1/4 cup before it slowed enough to pull it all the way off. Not sure how much leaks there with draining the oil. Probably will not do again.
