Any 2016 XC90 owners out there
Purchased from Fields Volvo. As it was a demonstrator with 10k on the clock, my discount wouldn't tell you much. I am pleased with Fields so far though and they seem to be taking care of my minor issues well.
Is anyone having any problems with the text message notifications, either in the center stack or in the Drivers Center display via Bluetooth? Do you have iPhone/Android and what carrier?
Some people are complaining about not having access to the text message option in Settings/Communication/Text Messaging. They are saying that this option is greyed out. Other are not having any problems. What we have found is this issue is isolated to the iPhone.

I purchased XC 90 last July, and have been experiencing troubles ever since. 1. Two weeks after we got the car, we were on road trip in Canada, the car could not start at all. It was towed over to a dealer nearby and I was told the battery connection wire was loose. 2. It always pops out "Battery running low" message ever since. 3. After 4000 miles, one of the rear window cannot be closed.
What frustrated me is that dealers seem cannot do much. They always need to contact the technician from Volvo headquarters to get support. It has been in the shop for 3 days, and I was told to expect it next week.
After reading this thread, I feel that I need to check the lemon law in my state, and decide my next step. It's such a pain!

Ours will start up and allow you to drive off without the key fob. My wife has already been stranded once and I had to bring her the key. I just tested it again and got in the car without the key and the car started right up. I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow but this seems like another software issue to me. Beware.
How is it that she got stranded if the car starts without the key?
There has to be a key within reception range of the car for it to start.
Are you certain that you don't have a key inside the vehicle i.e. sport key. Possibly in the glove box?
We bought our 2016 xc90 T6 in November 2015. It was a bit of a coincidence that they had one car in, pretty much, all of SoCal that day. I have had a couple issues.
First the gas tank has given me problems and now I can only fill it up at a select number of gas stations. Some of the nozzles attached to the pumps are not long enough (or something) to hit the sensor on the car tank, and even when the car is on empty, I've had gas splatter all over me, or leak into the fuel door and pour out onto the ground, which I believe is from a small hole inside the fuel door that is there to prevent overfill. Well, having to use the ultra premium gas, means bye bye $. I have also had an issue with the auto on off feature that shuts the car down every time you stop. What a nightmare, I have figured out how to turn the feature off, but I have to do it every time I start the car. I've also had the whole tech board, just totally go blank along with not having turned off the auto on/off engine feature, my whole car just shut down. Thank goodness I was just pulling out of my neighborhood when this "tech crash" happened, because it took quite some time to boot back up, in order to drive. The rotors went bad within a month of buying the car and we are still waiting for the dealership to get their shipment in, which I am guessing means it's been an issue with others.
Right now, it's in the shop for 2 updates that are supposed to address these glitches and to replace some recalled clips in the trunk area. What was supposed to take a day, has now turned into a week. The second update stops around 60%. They have had corporate send them condensed versions of this update, to supposedly address the additional 40%, which is still not working. I spoke with the service guys yesterday and asked if this had been an issue with other XC90's and his response was that it had only been an issue with the couple cars that had been sold in 2015, before the 2nd, larger "official" fleet release in 2016. Looking at this from a tech point of view, I told the service guy, you usually can't finish an update on a computer via a different method. If my computer can't update, for some reason, especially a cloud update that's been successfully updated on my other computers, it's usually because my hard drive is full. I have to delete files, erase the original attempted update, and start from the beginning. I don't know how to repair cars but I'm pretty well versed in tech. I think this might become an issue now that cars have modems & stuffed with tech that is responsible for so many driving features. The car service guys are going to have to be computer savvy, actually they should be. I certainly can't change oil or a tire or anything under the hood, but if I was taught these things, sure I'd, or we all would figure it out. That concept doesn't seem to be applied yet in the auto industry. They're selling vehicles that rely on tech and the service people don't know the first thing about uploads and downloads.
Anyway, my thoughts are, those of us who bought the first release of the 2016 vehicles, which seemed to be made for car shows or whatever reasons, might have also unknowingly gotten a car that WAS mostly for that...to show what would be released. And the hard drives are possibly much smaller, a whole lot of thought wasn't put into things like the gas tank, brakes, rotors, etc... Because they were, most likely, not meant to be driven...just possibly an example of what was to come.
Anyway, I love the car other then those issues, the auto engine on/off feature falls under one of the worst ideas of the decade, and hopefully will be addressed, but overall it's a good car. But for the price & for the time spent having to take it in, borrow a vehicle that I usually can't fit my family into, I'm not sure I would have jumped on buying one last year. Best advice to anyone considering the XC90, would be to, maybe, wait until the 2017 models are released & hopefully all the glitches have been addressed.

You may have some technology knowledge, but you don't understand how it works in a system like this. So hold the speculation, please. It isn't just like downloading something to your hard drive.
As for your rotors "going bad", did they squeak? If so, they are fine. Just annoying. Volvo has a new rotor available to take care of it.
The fuel tank likely needs replacement. There is a bulletin for this, but I'm not sure if it applies to the California cars.
The auto start isn't going anywhere. It will become more common actually, like Europe. It helps manufacturers meet government emissions requirements which keep getting more strict.

Just to update: my XC 90 has been in the shop for a week, and they are still waiting for Volvo technician from Sweden to get touch with them. I will be on a 10- day road trip tomorrow. The dealer gave me a Toyota 4 Runner for loan. I don't even know whether I will get my car back after the trip.

I ordered my vehicle last November. It arrived late June! Three weeks later (today) it was towed back to the dealer. While driving the vehicle today the screen with speedometer and tachometer went blank. The car lost all accelerating power, and I could only drive at 5 - 10 miles per hour (I couldn't determine how slow because the screen was blank). On a busy roadway, this experience was more than a little dangerous. The dealership provided me a loaner but won't be able to investigate my problems until next week. I have to admit more than a little buyer's remorse, particularly after now finding the threads of ongoing electrical problems reported by other owners. Has anyone out there experienced similar problems and had them resolved with ongoing reliability?
I recently purchased a 2016 XC90 - Momentum Plus - for my wife on 6/11/16.
It's a beautiful upgrade from her 2006 XC90, although the 2006 was a V8!
The interior is absolutely gorgeous, but there are lots of quirks with the controls.
I don't like that you have to use the touch screen to control the A/C Fan. I prefer a ****, that can be easily dialed up and down.
The other quirk is the Auto Start/Stop function.
I set all my preferences in the Driver Profile, but unless you choose Dynamic Drive Mode it defaults this setting to ON. Every time I start my vehicle, I must go into the touch screen and disable it.
Only had the car since 6/11, and it just posted an error message that the Auto Start/Stop requires service.
So a little research on line, and I found this statement at Volvo.custhelp.com:
Start/Stop is only available when the outside temperature is between 24 & 86 F! (It was 91-F, yesterday
)
I think I'm going to default my driving style to "Dynamic" to avoid this issue for the remaining 22 months of my lease! - Screw the gas mileage

My buy-back was just completed for a lot of the similar issues in this thread.

Looks like Motor Trend's SUV of the Year is only from an initial impression and not a long term test.

Had all same issues. Currently sat waiting for Volvo on call as the dashboard had gone off and the car won't accelerate beyond 15mph! This is my first Volvo and as I always have new cars, the first time I've had to call a breakdown service. I'm stunned at how many issues I've had with this new car!

Bc291:
After reading this thread, I too was curious about recalls.
There is an NHTSA site where you can search for recalls by VIN-
it's safercar dot gov
I entered the VIN for our 2016 XC90 that we picked up on 6/11/16 and there were NO RECALLS listed....

I looked at the site, and got the same thing; no active recalls. Still curious about a Tech bulletin though. Are you having the same issues?
Even when driving in city, sometimes when I hit the accelerator, the car jerks before moving. I had a BMW 2011 3 series, drove it for 4yrs, no issue at all!
Not at all happy with my purchase and guess what, they want me to put outstanding on the survey for each service visit. Shameless people, I must say!!!
Sell a garbage product and than ask how did we fix the garbage today is shameless in my opinion!
if you are being paid by Volvo to do this, let me tell you, you are doing a very ****ty job!!!
