Question Can you drive XC90 with a "popped out" front axle?

My 2004 XC90 T6 AWD was in the shop recently for bad front wheel bearings. The mechanic's non-mechanic employee called back saying the front axle "popped out" in his own words (according to my mom, who received the call) and is not drivable.

The weird thing is, when I dropped off the car, there was no grinding or crunching sound, which are typically signs of the axle about to fail totally, making it not drivable.

There was a bit of a knocking sound occasionally when driving, but certainly nothing that sounded as if the axle was going to fall off, or pop out.

All I want to do is make the car barely drivable, so I can drive to the dealership and trade it in. If its not totally fixed, I don't car, as long as it will drive.

Could it be that this shop employee told us it was not drivable just so we don't pick it up, or so we let them repair it for money?

Thanks a lot guys.

When the axle pops out many times there is no warning or noise before.
They are saying you need new parts?
Usually you just push axle in and it clicks when the retainer ring pops one the shaft goes in far enough and that is it.
