Clunking/squealing from front end 04 T6
Backstory, of course: Purchased 2004 XC90 T6AWD in May. Have had NOTHING BUT TROUBLE with it, although I want to love the car very badly. I'm a VW person but we have always had a Volvo wagon as a 3rd vehicle and haven't really had much trouble with them (we have a 92 740 that still runs great!)
So far I have: replaced tie rods on both sides, ball joint on passenger side, wheal bearing on passenger side, four new tires because of uneven wear from the bad tierods. Now, after the last repair in August, the car has been making a horrible noise upon turning. Kind of a squeaking/squealing noise, usually just at low speeds (pulling in and out of a parking spot, for instance). Wasn't all the time so we ignored it. Problem has been getting unbearable once winter set in. VW techs (husband works for a dealer) diagnosed bad steering rack. Thankfully it was mostly covered under warranty, since it was a $2400 repair. After paying $700 to spring it free from the dealer (VW techs said they needed special tools), I pulled it away from the dealer just to hear more squealing.
Called the service tech the following day since I'd picked the car up after hours, and he that he did recommend that it needed lower ball joints on both sides. my question: For $450, is that a fair price? Are special tools required or can our VW buddies tackle it? But, most importantly, WILL THIS RESOLVE THE SQUEALING?? I was poking around these forums and found something about a tsb for the steering yoke, and that this adjustment was being incorrectly diagnosed? In addition to the squealing, I also will routinely hear random pops and pings from under the front end of the car. Oh, it has 110k miles on it. We bought it around 97k. I very much loathe the thought of spending ANOTHER $500 on the car only to pull away with the noise, still. I would like to, for once in the 10 months we've had it, drive it without hearing anything.
