Clunks / Rattles
Wanted to add a couple of other items to check when there are clunk or rattle sounds coming from the rear of the vehicle…
Since buying the car, I’ve been hearing what sounded like a loose exhaust pipe banging against the body, or maybe a loose shock. Got underneath to check and found no loose exhaust nor suspension components. (Surprising on a car with 133,000 miles.) Then I noticed the fuel tank evap canister, which sits kindof on the subframe above the left rear axle shaft, was completely loose. I assume there was once a hold-down strap or clip but it was just flopping around. I threw a zip tie around the whole thing…no more clunking!
While I was under there I noticed the fuel filler pipe was also moving around a bit, so I zip-tied it snug against the little bracket which appears to be there to hold it from moving.
Here are a couple pics; first is the evap canister, second is the fuel filler pipe.
