Default Dissipating 'Clunking' sound...

Greetings all!

Well, my 2006 XC90 burned to a crisp in my garage fire, so I purchased another 2006 with 130,000 miles with a 2.5 engine.

Test drive was perfect.

First thing I did was purchase new tires (not sure if this has anything to do with the noise though).

Several days after, I started noticing a 'clunking' sound that sounds like a loose strut mount coming from the front drivers side that sounds off loud at every little bump in the road, but after 3-4 minutes of driving, the sound gradually goes away and stays away throughout the remainder of the day.

Every day since, it's been exactly the same...noisy for the first 3-4 minutes of driving after the initial start-up but the clunking ALWAYS gradually goes away.

I'm even thinking it might be a loose exhaust manifold bolt or two and maybe it's expanding when it gets hot and fills the void (grabbing at straws here).

Anyone out there have anything like this happen to them, and if so, can you give me a little guidance, as I am totally stumped on this one.

first thing I'd do is check the torque on your wheels (probably not related as your noise goes away, but given you had new tires its always a good idea to check within the first hundred miles or so ) Given your noise goes away, I think you are on the right track to look for things that heat up.

Have you gone under the car and given the exhaust system a shake when cold? felt around the heat shields (more likely to rattle than clunk)?

At 130K, I wouldn't rule out engine or transmission mounts (can't say why their noise would go away) - any thumps when going on/off the gas?
