Default Fuel door will not stay closed

Hello all, I have a 2006 xc90 and this week after putting in fuel, the fuel door will not stay closed. I found a little black thing that appears to be broke but I cant see where from. When we hit the fuel door release I can see the plunger move but it will not latch the fuel door closed. Any ideas??

Sounds like the door hinge is broke. There is tabs that hold the spring to make the door tight. They usually break and the door will open and close with no tension.

Yep; Tech is correct. The metal "spring" is suppose to rest on 2 tabs on the black hinge-base that is mounted to the car. These tabs break off regularly and cause the fuel door to "loose tension" making the door "flap".

The design was a simple but "under-engineered" IMO but a simple fix. You can purchase a new hinge from the dealer for about $11.00.

It is and easy DIY job. Once you get it; you can see how it can be replaced. There's 4 "push-in" pins that hold it attached to the vehicle.

Yes I do but even if you don't, they can be purchased at any hardware store for about 2 bucks.

Yes, but the black pins will go astray if you are not careful. keep a eye on them and use a little screwdriver to ream out the hole if they do. good luck simtech.

Sitting at a Volvo dealer having the fuel pump recall work completed (01 V70 leaks around fuel pump). Glad to see this. I hit up the parts counter while here and the hinge part was $13 (BTW, they wanted $58 to install the part. I think I'll handle this one)

Default My Case is a bit different

I believe that the piece that i supposed to come out and hold the latch does not come out if you get what I am trying to say. The door has not a loop but a square or rectangular piece with a hole in it and another piece should go through the hole to hold the door closed. This moving piece that is released from inside the car seems to be stuck in it's hole. Today I pushed the button in the car and it actually made the piece come out but with the door open. So now it is preventing the door from closing. Should something just be oiled? I hate to ask Volvo to fix it because they are such rip-off artists

I have occasionally had the same issue with the door not latching. Definitely not the hinge but instead is the pin that locks the door closed. I usually spray some lubricating oil (not WD40!) like an aerosol bike chain lube in that area, the hit the door release button a few times. Works like a charm.

What's up with referring to Volvo as rip off artists? Every dealer/service manager that I have worked with has been stellar. Maybe I'm just blessed with good luck.

That was my solution as well.
