Default Gas guage shows quarter tank, engine shuts down

We own a 2004 XC90, front-wheel drive, 5-cylinder. We were on the highway with a 1/4 tank of gas (& "114 miles to empty tank") showing on the gauge when the car shut down. Luckily I had a friend driving by that took me to the gas station where I purchased & put 2-gallons of gas in the tank & it started right up. My wife has had this happen to her before too at about the 1/4 tank remaining mark. When I went to the gas station to fill up it took about 3/4 of a tank of gas so the gauge was reading correctly. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Very frustrating.

Thanks

Any chance that there is damage to the tank? Such as a massive dent that could look like 4 gallons of gas by volume? I had this same problem on a Toyota due to off road damage to the tank.

It is my wife's car & never thought to look for this but will just to make sure. No off-roading that I am aware of but never know...
Thanks

Default engine shuts down follow-up

I got under the car last night to check the possibility of the tank being dented & it looks to be in great shape. Any other ideas? I have read on other posts about installing a check valve outside the gas tank if the fuel pump is going bad, could this be it?

Thanks
