Gremlins?
Here is my Volvo 2007 xc90 3.2L 6cyl issue:
About a year ago my windshield washer motor stopped working.
About six months ago my windshield wiper motor stopped working, front wipers only. Rear works fine.
About three months ago my shifter **** fell apart. I electric taped it back together.
Out of nowhere my windshield washer motor started working again, and the rear wiper turns on and runs everytime you put the car in reverse.
Thoughts?

time to dig out a wiring diagram to see where there are common elements (feeds, ground points, relays, fuses) then start checking for voltage and ground. What happens if you wiggle the multi-function stalk? That's common to the wipers/washers both front and rear. Not sure about what is going on with the car gets put in reverse other than energizing the back up lights, so that's another circuit path to look at.
