Yup could be a steering rack....Early production speed sensitive steering system is not that great..Ranging from freeplay, knocking noise on turn tonot sufficient power assist at low speed... I've replacedfew of those.. but also need to check pump output pressure to make sure pump have sufficient output..

I am new to this forum and wanted to inquire on a recurring problem that I am having with steering on my 2008 XC90 Sport. This first came up about 2 weeks ago when as I was pulling out of the garage. I noticed that it was difficult to turn (I typically do not start out until the engine has run for a couple of minutes - I was asked by the dealership if I left cold; I did not). It was fine on the freeway but as I pulled into the parking lot of my workplace (about 15 miles later), I noticed the tightness again. Later that same day (after the engine compartment and fluids had cooled), I checked the PS Fluid and it was on the low side.

I immediately made an appointment and brought the car to the dealership to have it checked out. They weren't able to locate any leaks or problems so they just filled the PS fluid (they also said that they usually like to recreate the issue - understandably; however there was no sign of any problems at the time that I brought it in).

Today, I drove for a few miles and parked. When I hopped back into the car and reversed out of the lot, the steering was difficult again. It continued at slower speeds on turns as well as reversing back into my garage. Any thoughts? I wondered if the original inquiry by Sean177 was ever solved. BTW, I have been driving the car since April 2008 as well as previously leased a 2004 XC90 T6 and do not typically have problems turning, even in tight corners.

Any thoughts and/or ideas would be appreciated. I am thinking of bringing it in to the dealership again but fear that they won't be able to find anything and it's something that is very difficult to explain when it comes and goes.
